Process
Our design approach hinges on the belief that sense of place is important and impactful – and that we collectively have the opportunity to enhance one’s experience with the built environment.
To do this, we invite and encourage collaboration from as many voices as possible. This can range from owners to users to community members and beyond. We believe together we can improve our built environment while implementing important sustainable and environmental goals. The process allows us to consistently develop projects that improve sites and, of course, meet project needs and goals. For 30 years, gbA has continually collaborated with owners, users, and builders to create buildings and structures that are simple, thoughtful, and dignified responses to both the site, the user, and the community at large.
gbA uses an integrated design approach that builds upon the input of all team members. Depending on the project, this process begins through design workshops which may occur in the studio or as part of a community forum. We look at the building program (how the building is to be used), site context, and environmental impacts and opportunities so that we can identify sustainability and program goals. This begins the mapping of the project and is used as way to circle back to assess the direction and trajectory of a response.
We work closely with all members of the design team, the client(s) and all stakeholders, developing and reviewing building plans from the earliest stages, overseeing construction contracts and observing the construction of the project. Close attention to detail and building techniques plus strong project management ensures project implementation meets or exceeds our clients’ vision and goals.
Each and every project is unique and affords gbA the opportunity to select strategies and technologies that benefit the project the most. We develop designs and responses by using a wide range of media – Building Information Modeling (BIM), physical models, computer models, hand sketches, etc. – whatever best suits the development of the project. As the project is developed, gbA uses processes that test and quantify design and energy performance goals. BIM allows for more control and confidence in the final outcome of the project so that we can deliver a high quality and complete design. We also collect and analyze data so that we can assess building performance over time. Our energy analysis tools that integrate with BIM allow us to develop the highest performance options at the lowest cost. Our team can leverage data driven insights to make informed design decisions.
Through this comprehensive and collaborative approach to the design process, we are able to take the design journey alongside our clients and meet or exceed expectations.
