Milton School Milton, VT
- 1999—AIA Vermont Excellence in Architecture Award
This project involved a 75,000 sq ft addition and renovation of an existing 100,000+ sq ft elementary and middle school facility.
The program includes a library, cafeteria, gymnasium, classrooms, labs, administrative offices, and gathering places for students.
The exterior wall system of the education wing of the addition is brick veneer detailed to express its non-structural nature, by floating the panels. In contrast, the gymnasium exterior wall system is exposed load bearing CMU. The addition has large areas of glazing on the southern façade for solar gain during the winter and overhangs to shade and reduce cooling loads during warmer months. Clerestory windows in the gym are operable for chimney effect ventilation and cooling.
