Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society Meeting House Middlebury, VT

In 2005, gbA completed a feasibility study for the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society (CVUUS) concerning a possible renovation of their meetinghouse in Middlebury, Vermont. In 2008, the first phase of this renovation was embarked upon.

The building was designed to be a distinctive place of worship, a model of sustainability, and an integral part of the Middlebury community. The massing and scale were kept at a level to reflect the nearby residential area, while the Sanctuary, with a southern orientation, was created to be bathed in natural light and provide views out to the wooded hill side. Environmental sensitivity and efficiency was also an integral part of the building design, with materials, systems, and design based off of the desire to create the most sustainable building possible.

In 2015, gbA provided Pre-Design work to detail multiple possible options for Phase II of the project – a redesign of the lower level. Now, in 2017, CVUUS is moving ahead with that redesign, and gbA will be further developing the design and carrying the project through to construction.
